Research related to the science of reading is relatively new. We offer professional development, data analysis, and coaching for school communities. We use the Targeted Assistance Plans to help schools maximize student academic performance.
Even when you know the science, it's not always clear how to adjust instructional practices for implementation. We offer insight and support to help adjust schedules and activities to increase student reading achievement.
We want everyone to understand how kids learn to read. We offer community sessions and resources to help families go beyond what schools may offer to ensure that their children are positioned for success.
Our signature product is the Targeted Assistance Plan (TAP). Since their inception in 2017, teachers have used TAPs to grow great readers. Based in the science of learning and the science of reading, TAPs are designed to help students and teachers by maximizing student growth using readily available assessment data. TAPs are easy to use tools that provide teachers with quick and inexpensive activities to implement on a rotating basis. Implementing the strategically chosen and research based activities as suggested in the plans makes life easier for teachers and happier for students. The methods prescribed in the plans are grounded in the science of learning and have proven effective for practitioners in fields from sports to music.
"In my 12 years working with students in Baltimore City Schools, nothing has accelerated the impact of my small groups more than the use of Targeted Assistance Plans. These plans are rooted in developmentally appropriate philosophies that scaffold and reinforce best practices. Their implementation enabled me to be better organized, refine existing best practices, and create re-usable intervention tools. With consistent implementation grounded in MOY, EOY and progress monitoring data I was able to see dramatic impact in real-time growth."

“Smarty Pants Tutoring uses modified versions of Targeted Assistance Plans. After assessing students' phonics and phonemic awareness skills, we provide targeted interventions that are grounded in the science of reading and the principle of interleaving. Using TAPs with our students, we are able to provide individualized and fun activities that begin with their lowest foundational skills as indicated by their assessments. TAPs have given us a structure for our sessions that keeps our Smarty Pants engaged and growing as readers.”
